6L Preparation

Before you go for your 6L assessment, you do need to control a motorcycle effectively and should practice the tasks needed to complete the 6L assessment.

See the links in practical assessment further down to see this.

I have done a few hours of basic training, now am I ready?

Every rider has a different timelines to learning, retaining and passing the various licence stages. Most riders average 5-10 practice hours from knowing absolutely nothing about riding a motorcycle to completing the learners 6L BHST assessment with confidence.

Rate yourself out of 10 if you can complete all the items shown in the Absolute basic YouTube playlist before asking if you are ready for the 6L BHST - You really need a self confidence rating of 6/10 or better to consider practicing for your 6L BHST assessment.

No matter the size of the motorcycle, the absolute beginner series skillset applies to all motorcycles. Understand your controls!

What if I don’t have access to a motorcycle?

What came first, the motorcycle or the motorcycle licence (ie chicken or egg scenario)?

When you start out you may not have a vehicle to start with.

1. Review motorcycle riding schools in your area and make a booking. They have many motorcycles and shared protective equipment that can be supplied at the same time as your 6L assessment.

2. A friend or family member trusts themselves to assist and lend the vehicle to assist you. (Still need the safety gear!)

I have already motorcycle I use to practice with, can I use this in the assessment?

Legally, you cannot ride on public roads without a motorcycle licence.

But if a motorcycle licence holder rides the motorcycle to the 6L assessment location on your behalf, you may then sit the assessment using your preferred motorcycle.

The licence holder must ride the motorcycle back after the 6L assessment regardless if you pass, you need to pass your theory test and obtain the licence from NZTA before riding on public roads!

The motorcycle must be LAM’s approved, have a current Warrant of Fitness (WOF) and be fully functional ie signal lamps, brake lamps etc and have current registration. You may wear your own safety gear.

Resources for the 6L licence

There is the practical assessment (BHST) and the theory (multi choice) items you need to complete to obtain your 6L license!

There is also an eye test done at this stage of the licence submission.

NZTA Support link

For completeness, here is the NZTA support link regarding obtaining your learner motorcycle licence (6L), Contains everything you need.

1 Practical assessment (BHST)

You only do this specific “Basic Handling Skills Test” assessment for the 6L license, it is not performed not on public roads.

Book a time to do your BHST with a NZTA approved motorcycle training school.

When you pass the BHST assessment, you take the provided competency certificate to a NZTA outlet at the same time you sit your theory test. When you have passed the theory part of the 6L license requirements you then get your licence updated to include the 6L.

2 Theory testing

You only sit this test for the 6L license, 6R and 6F are physical

assessment sessions only.

You must get 32/35 correct to pass, 5 are motorcycle specific questions… Once you do this every day for a week, you will know a lot more than your thought you did, practice it over and over!

Note: If you had a 6L licence but it has now lapsed, you can pay a fee to NZTA to renew this and go straight to preparing for your 6R license.

Book a time to sit your theory test at any approved NZTA outlet.
