6R and 6F Preparation

Before you go for your 6R or 6F assessment, Aside from effective control of a motorcycle you will need to have good habits for head and mirror checks, positioning and speed control and all the competencies expected.

See the rider competency list further down this page.

Rider habits, good and the bad?

It takes about 10 hours to set in one habit properly by repeat actions so it becomes automatic, thats why good habits should be practiced soon as possible so you don't have to un-learn bad habits!

What are bad habits?
Crossing solid white lines at intersections, not turning off indicators after use, not checking mirrors before stopping at any intersection, not doing head checks when changing lanes or being too close to other vehicles through corners (Center line riders on right corners… looking at you!)

Moto Agent Helper has made a collection of common areas to focus on to assist with good habits that will be needed to pass your 6R or 6F assessment.

You should have you own motorcycle for 6R and 6F assessments

To obtain your 6R (Restricted) or 6F (Full) motorcycle licence, you will need to have done around 100 hours of riding to obtain all the required skills and confidence to complete this assessment. - That is assuming your 100 hours was used to create good rider habits!

After your 6L assessment, you should look to purchase a LAMs motorcycle (Learner Approved Motorcycle) to acquire the rider experience needed. See link: What is a good LAMs motorcycle.

It is unlikely you will pass this assessment without understanding what is needed. ACC Ride Forever courses are cost friendly solutions to obtain some information on your rider progress and get valuable feedback on what you need to work on as a motorcycle rider. See: Rider competencies list

1. Review motorcycle riding schools in your area and make a booking. They have many motorcycles and shared protective equipment that can be supplied at the same time as your 6R/F assessment.

2. A friend or family member trusts themselves to assist and lend the vehicle to assist you. (Still need the safety gear!)

NZTA Support link

For completeness, here is the NZTA support link for restricted or full motorcycle licence (6R/6F), Contains everything you need.

Resources for the 6R and 6F licence

There is the practical assessment you need to complete to obtain your 6R and 6F license.

There is also an eye test done at this stage of the licence submission.

Practical assessment 6R and 6F

The assessment is performed on public roads. The 6F assessment is similar to 6R in that all the same rider competencies are tested to see if you retained good riding habits and more open road speed zones are used for the 6F assessment.

Book a time to do your assessment with a NZTA approved motorcycle training school.

When you pass the assessment, you take the provided competency certificate to a NZTA outlet to update your licence.

What are the assessors looking for?

Everything is simple in hindsight, but as a learner or restricted licence holder, this is the assessment that will show any bad habits and mistakes you have developed to date.

This is why we make the videos so you see what things look like and work towards good habits and pass your assessment! See the YouTube playlist in the rider habit section above.

The items listed and performed in the rider competency list is not exclusive to this assessment.  All these items work in real life and will keep you alive vs the amount of distracted vehicle users that exist on the public road network so best not to dismiss this as a one-off to complete the assessment!
